HISTORY
Since 1960 in Barcelona
GRASSOLER SA was founded in 1960 by José Gras Soler, a very young entrepreneur who at the age of 19 and after having learned the trade with his uncle, borrowed money from his father and with the help of his mother as a sewer, hired an employee and started his project of setting up an upholstery company, creating a brand by joining the surnames of his parents.
The first order (a “Comet” armchair) was delivered by himself with the help of his only employee on a Vespa.
The business began to grow around 1964, with the company’s first great sales success, a model called Davis, which catapulted it in Spain thanks to the revolutionary spring system and iron frame that it incorporated, developed by José Gras and patented by Grassoler, called Intelligent System®, considered a design that incorporated great constructive engineering and is the culmination of the binomial design and ergonomics to achieve maximum rest. In 1966 the company had grown so much that it was decided to buy a plot of land in Cerdanyola del Vallés and built a 12,000m2 building with offices, factory, showroom and warehouse. It was also a pioneer in introducing into the Spanish upholstered furniture market techniques unknown at that time, such as cold molding of polyurethane, setting up a foaming department with its own chemist.
Later, in the early 70’s, he obtained several manufacturing licenses for Spain, from an important German company and then another French one, and in 1976 he was elected as Spain’s representative in the International Furniture Federation (IFF). All this contributed to the beginning of the desire to export first to Europe and later in the 80’s to the USA and some Asian countries, and in the 90’s to the rest of the continents.
